In the early 19th century, the symbols of the ancient world provided the major subjects for the decorative arts, reflecting the desire of Emperor Napoleon I to proclaim the greatness of his reign. Designs are symmetrical; the straight lines are strict, underlined by laurels and palmettes, as well as animals, including bees, sphinxes and eagles. Ercuis’ “Empire” collection elegantly evokes the decorative themes of the period, and its compositions feature on lavishly decorated pieces that have been painstakingly assembled, soldered, bordered and engraved in our workshop.
